Project Lifesaver
The Crestwood Fire Department adopted the Project Lifesaver Program in 2019, thanks to generous community donations. Special thanks to Christmas in Crestwood for its continued support of this lifesaving initiative.
What is Project Lifesaver?
Project Lifesaver is a nonprofit public safety program that helps quickly locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to wandering—a potentially life-threatening behavior. Founded in 1999 in Chesapeake, Virginia, the program has grown internationally and is recognized as a proven method of “bringing loved ones home.”
It was the first organization to combine radio-frequency tracking, specialized search and rescue techniques, and first responder training focused on cognitive conditions. Certified Project Lifesaver agencies have significantly reduced recovery times—from hours or days to an average of just 30 minutes.
How Does It Work?
Administered locally by public safety agencies, the program equips participants with a small wrist or ankle transmitter that emits a unique radio signal. If a client goes missing, caregivers alert the agency, and trained search teams use the signal to locate them quickly.
Participating agencies receive equipment and certification training from Project Lifesaver International. This includes technical instruction, search protocols, and education on cognitive conditions—ensuring responders know how to approach and assist individuals once located. Access to the PLS Database is also included to support ongoing program management.
Residential Fire Safety Inspections
Residential fire safety inspections are conducted at the request of the home owner that are informational and non-binding on the owner.
Smoke Detector Assistance Program
The Crestwood Fire Department offers a Smoke Detector Assistance Program for older adults and residents with disabilities who are unable to replace smoke detector batteries on their own. Each fall, the department contacts enrolled residents to schedule battery replacement visits.
In some cases, if a home lacks working smoke detectors, the department may be able to provide a limited number, depending on availability. Due to updated safety codes and supply limitations, the department cannot guarantee the full number of detectors required for complete home coverage.
- To join the program, call 314-729-4744.
Special Needs Program
In the event of an incident causing structural damage to homes in the City, the Fire Department has developed a program to locate residents with mobility challenges. We have a list of addresses where the inhabitants may not be able to reach an area of refuge. These locations will be noted and we’ll have a better idea of whom may have difficulties if the house is damaged.
Station Tours
The Crestwood Fire Department welcomes visitors to stop by and view the fire trucks. For large groups or class visits, advance scheduling is recommended. Tours can also include safety presentations or other fire-related topics tailored to the group’s interests.

Operation Etch-And-Catch
The Crestwood Police Department is proud to be the first in the St. Louis area to launch Operation Etch-and-Catch, a proactive effort to deter catalytic converter theft.
In partnership with local auto service shops, this program allows vehicle owners to request a free service during qualifying maintenance. When a vehicle is lifted or accessed from below, the shop can:
- Etch the license plate number onto the catalytic converter
- Apply a bright, high-temperature paint stripe for easy identification
This service is completely voluntary and only available through participating businesses.
By etching the converter with a traceable ID, law enforcement can log it into a national crime database. This helps officers identify stolen converters and trace them back to their rightful owners. We also plan to share this information with local recyclers and scrap yards to further aid in the recovery of stolen property.
