Since its launch in 2010, the Challenge has engaged more than 300 companies, nonprofits, and municipalities, influencing over 730,000 employees and residents to align local environmental stewardship with global sustainability standards.

Through customized coaching from the Missouri Botanical Garden’s EarthWays Center, Crestwood implemented a series of impactful initiatives that earned this honor.

“Sustainability isn’t just a program for Crestwood, it’s a mindset," said Mayor Scott Shipley. "We recognize that all changes can have big impacts and I’m proud of our past efforts and the work that continues.”

Here are the steps Crestwood took to earn this distinction:

Key Accomplishments

  • Restored habitats: Began a multi-phase “Back to Nature” project in Crestwood Park, funded by the Missouri Department of Conservation, to restore natural ecosystems over the next three years.
  • Upgraded solar lighting: Installed new solar-powered lights at Whitecliff Park to improve energy efficiency and safety.
  • Engaged the community: Hosted multiple “Honeysuckle Hack” volunteer events to remove invasive species and educate residents on restoring native habitats.
  • Reduced plastic waste: Installed water bottle filling stations in city offices to cut down on single-use plastics.

Innovative Steps

  • Transitioned to a paperless office, including digitized picnic reservations and electronic documentation.
  • Installed a Green Flush modular restroom system at Quarry Pond Pavilion, designed for maximum water and energy conservation.
  • Hired native plant expert Angie Weber of EcoLandscaping STL to lead a comprehensive conservation program for the community.
