Department Overview
The City Planning and Economic Development Department was created to coordinate the City's physical and economic development activities. This includes working with potential and existing businesses through day-to-day interactions. Additionally, the department coordinates and compiles economic data and provides assistance to businesses going through the City's development process. The division also facilitates short and long-term physical and economic planning within the City of Crestwood.
The City Planner serves as the director and administrator of Planning and Zoning and Economic Development efforts in the City. The City Planner also serves as the staff liaison to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Economic Development Commission. The City Planner makes recommendations to the City Administrator, Planning and Zoning Commission, Economic Development Commission, and Board of Adjustment regarding zoning, subdivisions, conditional use permits, variance issues and other land use legislation.
The Planning and Zoning Commission is responsible for the review of all proposed site plans and conditional use permits. The Zoning Code requires that prior to the issuance of a building permit for all exterior modifications to buildings in the C-1, M-1, and PD Zoning Districts, a site plan review must be conducted by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
Local Economy
The City of Crestwood is home to high-tech companies, major manufacturing firms, and a top-rated residential market. Crestwood has consistently been named one of the nation's hottest ZIP codes for residential home purchases. According to a 2018 Article by Realtor.com, "The biggest reason for Crestwood’s popularity is its prices, which are about half of those of the surrounding area of historic Kirkwood and Webster Groves." Crestwood is a bargain community offering its own police and fire districts at less than half the tax rates of its neighboring cities that offer comparable services.
